Exploring Cumbria
Summer is on the way and what better time to explore Cumbria? There are so many great destinations in the county but here are our favourites for weekend exploring and summer nights. Let us know where you’re heading and where in Cumbria features on your favourites list.
Carlisle
Carlisle is the only city in the county and falls just short of the Scottish border. Famed for its beauty and the second-smallest cathedral in the country, the city is full of things to see and do. The largest settlement on Hadrian’s Wall, it’s also home to Tullie House Museum which is based in an old mansion!
Coniston
The Old Man of Coniston is probably the landmark you’ll want to see. A short walk and you’re on top of the fell looking out. As well as this, Coniston water promises canoe and sailing trips from a local water sports company. Home to influential thinker John Ruskin, in his final days, Coniston offers some history and culture amongst the pretty scenery.
Penrith
Sitting close to the Scottish border, its location played a vital part in history for thousands of years. History and culture remain present today, from the castle though to exploring the Bronze Age. The Aira Force waterfall is also nestled here which is an enchanting sight and near to our HQ in Appleby!
Hawkshead
A small village in the middle of the National Park but not without charm or character. Home to Esthwaite water and a perfect spot for trout and pike fishing in the Autumn. It was also home to Beatrix Potter, with her home ‘Hill Top’ still sitting near the lake. It’s managed by the National Trust and it’s definitely worth the visit.
We are lucky to be based in Appleby, Cumbria with such stunning towns and lakes around us. Pay us a visit to see our range of used cars in Cumbria and maybe you can do some exploring yourself!
